Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi

It is said that if you want to know a community, you have to attend their festivals. The festivals of any community are like the mirror of their culture. It not only gives you the glimpse of their traditions, rituals and age old customs, but also gives you the rare opportunity to know their way of life as well.
India is a land of multicultural communities and it is quite obvious to have a number of festivals of each community. And one of those famous festival is Ganesh Chaturthi. It is said that Ganesh Chatturthi is the first festival, which sets the start of the festive season in India.Β
Β
According to the Hindu calendar ,the Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day ofΒ Bhadrapada month. The Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi. This festival is celebrated in theΒ honorΒ of lord Ganesh. It is said that Lord Ganesh isΒ believed to be the remover of obstacles and the lord of intellect and wisdom.Β
The festival begins with the Β installation of Ganesh Idol at home or Pandals and then it continues with rituals and ceremonies for next 11 long days. People from far off distances, visit the pandals to worship Lord Ganesh. The festivities are at its peak during these 11 days. Β The last day is one of the most exciting days for the devotees as they gather in the pandal which leads to the prayer and other rituals and finally the journey to emersion begins with a long procession. A complete visual treat.Β  This ritual is known as Ganesh Visarjan.
Β
This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will begin on September 17 and visarjan will take place on September 27. Β
The preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi start much before the festival. Artisans from different parts of India start making the giant Ganesh Idols several months in advance.Β
Β
Β
The intricate details and designs of those craftsmen can be seen in those giant Idols once they are complete.Β
The Ganesh Chaturthi is widely celebrated in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Though if I talk about the grandeur of the celebration, then it has to be in Mumbai. The city of Dreams becomes the city of joy for these 11 days. From the streets to pandals, the true spirit of people are can be seen during the festival .Β  The colourful streets, long queues, sound of beating drums , Ganapati chants, Modak, well decorated pandals, and happy faces – This is Mumbai in Ganesh Chaturthi. It’s interesting to see people from different cultural background come together to celebrate this grand festival with equal devotion. Mumbai wears the colours of faith , devotion and Joy during the celebration of this grand festival.Β
