Junoon in the Hills: A Beautiful Holiday Home in Uttarakhand

Darkness had fallen in the valley and I decided to be a part of the transition quietly. The stillness in the air and the sound of wind accompanied me as I sat on the swing. While holding my hot cup of tea, I was swaying in the air and the unruly breeze ran through my body. I curled up cozily on the swing and looked up. The view of the star-studded sky with the bright moon was rewarding. I couldn’t have asked for a better setup for my perfect evening. All I wanted was to soak in the aura of silence completely, without caring much about time.

The sense of belonging is very strong whenever I am in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. The towering hills, humble pahadi people, smile on the faces of the kids, the freshness in the air or the enchanting landscapes around, make me feel warmly welcomed, the moment I start travelling up in the hills.

Everything just looks familiar to me. It’s been more than a decade that I have been negotiating my way up on the twisted roads in Uttarakhand, but each time I drive up to a new destination, it excites me like a kid. This time my destination was a sleepy village called Darmani, 70 km away from the Kathgodam station. Located at a height of 4500 feet, Junoon in the hills was going to be my abode for the next few days.

About Junoon in the hills

The name “Junoon in the hills” was quite intriguing as it echoes the endless passion. You realize it once you land up there. Unlike any other resorts in the hills, this is more of a private luxury home than a resort. “This home is a labour of love for Amitabh Sharma (owner of Junoon in the hills)”, says our gracious host. Every single corner of the property speaks a lot about his passion for the perfect abode with breathtaking vistas of hills and beyond.

The manicured lawn, gorgeously laid out garden with a hundred varieties of flowers, the huge Buddha Statue, the swing and lounge area, give you endless reasons to unwind in the best possible way or rather an opportunity to sweat out all the things weighing on your mind by simply absorbing the beauty of the surrounding.

Junoon in the hills by Aamod Resorts is a cozy holiday home. You will be amazed to know that there is no concept of reception and restaurant at the premises. Like any other home, you will be welcomed to this beautiful residence which houses three rooms in the main building and two rooms in their guest house. Each room has a valley facing view with large glass windows that allow ample sunlight throughout the day.

The main hall/lobby area which they call drawing room is equipped with a comfortable sofa, small library, open fireplace and a wood-burning cast iron stove to keep it warm during the winter months.

A half-level above the drawing room is a large open space, where one can hang out, watch television and can also use the pool table during leisure time.

The glass fronted drawing room opens onto a covered deck with an alluring landscape of the hills and the valley. This is one of the coziest places where one can literally spend hours sitting, catching up with friends, or reading your favorite book. They also have a common dining area, attached to the kitchen, where you can even make your own tea or coffee.

The best part of the resort is that you can book the entire property for a large group or family and in that case, they generally don’t allow other guests. It undoubtedly makes you feel at home and allows you to enjoy your holiday in private. The staff is very courteous and hospitable.

What I did during my stay

Once you are here, it slows you down inadvertently from your otherwise fast paced life. All I wanted to do was to laze around, relax and catch up on my sleep. But no matter how much I try not to step out when I am in the hills, it is kind of imperative for me to stroll around the place and have a glimpse of the local lifestyle. Those scattered houses, step farming, hazy hills and peeking sun-rays convince you to go a few extra miles on the hilly terrain.

I love those aimless walks for some reason. Whether it was crossing path with the locals, sharing smiles with the kids on the road, or watching the sunset, I cherished each of those tiny moments in the quaint village.

Junoon in the hills is like a secluded heaven perched on a hill top. If you like to steal a few precious moments from your busy schedule, and wish to spend a quality holiday, quietly away from the glare of people, Junoon in the hills is the perfect holiday home for you.

I was invited to Junoon in the hills on a press trip and the entire trip was organised by the Escape Route.

Wow! What a rejuvenating getaway in the lap of nature! ‘Junoon’ lives upto its name – Passion to be connected to the spirit of Mother Nature. I like the way they have omitted the concept of reception and it’s more like a home in the midst of greenery and hills. Lack of crowd is another bonus point of this resort. I would love to stay here some day and enjoy its tranquil vibes. Thanks for sharing this lovely piece of heaven.

A great find and not full of tourists. And what a name to go with it Junoon in the hills. The views ore incredible and the hose itself like you rightly said is more of a private villa the a resort. It looks cosy and homely and away from the madness like some of the other populate hill stations in India. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful place and love that its just perched on the terrace hills. That swing looks glorious. Do you get a view of the hills form there? I could sit there forever if that were the case. The hotel looks more like someone’s home and that’s the best kind of place to stay!
