WHERE IS PIGEON ISLAND LOCATED?
The famous pigeon island is just a few minutes’ boat ride from Nilaveli beach in Trincomalee. Located around 10 km from Trincomalee town on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, Pigeon Island is easily accessible and a perfect destination for your day trip. Pigeon Island flaunts the best marine life in Sri Lanka. The fragile coral reef of Pigeon Island extends 200m long and 100m in width. The island is one of the only two marine national parks in Sri Lanka.
WHAT IS PIGEON ISLAND ALL ABOUT?
The name “Pigeon Island” was intriguing enough for me to jump into the boat for a day trip. The island was home to a Blue Rock Pigeon, a native endangered bird. That is how the island got its name after the bird. It was in 2003 when the island called the status of a National Park, and the boundaries were extended.
The Pigeon Island national park is a prominent destination with great marine life. It is one of the most captivating islands for travelers, with a white sandy beach, a shallow coral reef, stunning rock formations, a “Shark Area,” and numerous underwater creatures. The island is home to more than one hundred varieties of corals, various reef fish, and different species of sea turtles.
Central Pigeon Island has two parts, a large pigeon island and a small one. The large pigeon island is where one can enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving and swim with the sharks. The small pigeon island is surrounded mainly by rocky islets.
The best part of visiting Pigeon Island is that it is well-maintained and well-preserved due to its fragile coral reef and exotic marine life. It makes the island a protected area that is unique in Sri Lanka.
Except for travelers who are interested in scuba diving and snorkeling, you will not see any crowds on the island. That makes it relatively peaceful and offbeat. One can visit the island easily from Nilaveli beach in Trincomalee for a day trip.
One can just relax and enjoy the island life without indulging in diving. Unfortunately, no accommodation is available, and tourists are not allowed to stay on the island. Therefore, planning your getaway from your hotel or resort from Trincomalee to Pigeon Island is best.
THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PIGEON ISLAND
The best time to visit Pigeon Island is between March to October. The Northeastern monsoon season starts in October in Sri Lanka. During this period, the sea becomes rough, making it impossible to visit the island. The Navy and private boat owners do not operate any boats due to weather conditions. Therefore, planning your trip to Pigeon Island before the monsoon season is advisable to get an unmatched snorkeling and scuba diving experience.
SNORKELING ON PIGEON ISLAND
Pigeon island is the best place to go for snorkeling in Sri Lanka. Swimming with the Black Tip Reef Sharks and different species of sea turtles is one of a kind experience you get on Pigeon Island. The pristine water and shallow coral reef make it quite vibrant as well. You do not need to be a scuba diver to snorkel on the island. Anyone can do snorkeling with a guide on Pigeon Island.
Before entering the Pigeon Island national park, one must purchase the Entrance Ticket. It includes the entrance ticket to Pigeon Island, boat ticket, and parking fee. For snorkeling or Scuba diving, one needs to pay extra for the guide.
SCUBA DIVING ON PIGEON ISLAND
If you love scuba diving, the Pigeon Island national park is one of the ideal places to experience it. Unlike snorkeling and scuba diving, the diver can swim around the rocks in the island area. You will not get to see the Black Tip Sharks but hundreds of tropical sea fishes like the crown of thorns starfish, scorpion fish, lionfish, sting rays, anemone fish, sea turtles, cuttlefish, squids, octopus, puffer fish, spiny lobsters and more.
The dives on Pigeon Island are not that deep, and the maximum depth is 10-12 meters. But, due to clear water, the underwater visibility is quite good in this area.
